Connie Ray StockhamBiographyConnie Ray Stockham is Of Counsel in Wicker Smith’s Birmingham office, where she handles insurance coverage and reinsurance matters, bad faith and appellate matters, as well as continuing her practice in other complex matters including class action, environmental actions, contractual disputes, and personal injury and wrongful death cases. A seasoned litigator and coverage attorney with over 40 years of experience, Connie has been committed to excellence in the practice of law since she entered the University of Alabama Law School in 1976. Upon her graduation, she served as a law clerk for The Honorable Judge James Hancock in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, where she saw firsthand the important of clarity in communication and ethical advocacy. On her entry to practice, she quickly learned that strong relationships with her clients and giving them her best would be her enduring motivators. In 1993, Connie and her husband, Richard J. Stockham, III, opened their own litigation and insurance coverage firm in Birmingham. She went on to continue to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of defense litigation and built a successful career serving as the lead attorney in numerous trials and appellate matters throughout Alabama. Their firm was well known for the integrity, dedication, and experience of the two founding partners. In 2017, when Stockham, Cooper & Potts was formed, Connie had the good fortune of being able to continue her service to many of the same clients she had served for years, as well as new ones. The firm grew to include eight lawyers and numerous staff, before the lawyers and staff of the firm joined Wicker Smith in 2025 to become its first Alabama office. In addition to her litigation experience, Connie has served as adjunct faculty with the University Honors Program of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, teaching in the inter-disciplinary program and offering law and bioethics related seminars since 2002. “Body Snatching to Organ Donation – Autonomy and Justice in Conflict and Balance” is one of the many well-received courses she has designed and taught. When Connie isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her husband Richard, and pursuing their respective interests – hers in bioethics and his as a wood block print artist. Their family, friends, dogs, books and art fill their lives. Professional & Civic Affiliations
