MIAMI—October 23, 2006—Firm
members as well as friends and family from the Wicker Smith Miami office laced
up their best pair of sneakers to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation’s “Race for the Cure” 5K Run/Walk held this past Saturday, October
21, 2006.
The ceremony
began at 7:30 a.m. with the survivor procession followed by the 5K run/walk at
8:30 a.m. Over 14,000 people participated in the run with 75% of net proceeds
raised from the event to support local breast cancer programs. This year,
almost 212,920 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer – over
40,970 are expected to die from this disease. In men, 1,720 will be diagnosed
and 460 will die this year.
The Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory
of her sister, Suzy, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation
has become a national organization with a network of volunteers working through
local Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure® events across the
country.
